Case 1: Combined treatment with Clear Braces as the first stage and Composite Buildups as the second
Treatment Stage: Initial Examination
Dana: It is never too late to have braces. To be sure, ask your dentist if you are suitable for orthodontic treatment.
Louis: Suitability for having adult orthodontic treatment depends on the condition of your teeth and gums.
Treatment Stage: Initial Exam
Dana: At the initial consultation I usually carry out a full orthodontic exam and talk about all the different types of braces. This patient decided on the smallest clear fixed braces because the lower front teeth are very small.
Louis: Dana takes into account every patient's individual needs so be sure to tell Dana your main concerns.
Treatment Stage: Initial Exam and Treatment Planning
Dana: After the initial consultation I spend some time writing up the treatment plan. Both the dentist and the patient can then better understand all the treatment options and also the treatment goals and limitations. Louis usually invites the patient back for a discussion appointment. At this appointment he explains the orthodontic treatment options one more time plus any other planned cosmetic dental work once the braces are removed. Patients find this very helpful because they sometimes need guidance on choosing the best treatment option.
Louis: Dana's treatment plans clearly specify if there is a need for dental extractions or if there is a need for cosmetic dental work once the brace is removed. Cosmetic dental work means composite build-ups, veneers, bleaching or dental contouring. For this particular patient, some composite build-ups are planned for sometimes after the brace is removed. Some of the front teeth are congenitally small and other teeth have chipped edges due the presence of cross-bites and general wear.
Treatment Stage: Model set-up for the Indirect Bonding technique
Dana: For this case I have chosen to use the Indirect Bonding Technique so that I can get the brackets fitted faster and more accurately. The first step is to mark the plaster models with the appropriate bracket heights.
Louis: Dana has planned the treatment down to the smallest detail. For efficiency, the brackets have to be accurately placed. Once the brackets are glued on the outside to the teeth, the wires do most of the work. While in treatment with braces, dental checkups with your dentist should continue just as before, which is normally every 6 months.
Treatment Stage: Accurate bracket positining for the Indirect Bonding technique
Dana: In this photo you can see that I have glued the brackets on the plaster models first. I have also made a soft transfer tray. During the bond-up procedure, because I am using Indirect Bonding Technique, all the brackets will be attached to the teeth at the same time. A normal bond-up procedure takes 45-60 minutes to complete. This lovely patient was also offered to watch a movie in the DVD glasses during that time. Be sure to request your entertainment option via the OrthoGuide app.
Louis: It has always been my goal to offer the best service to our patients. Make sure you let Dana know your personal preferences, such as: if you require early or late appointments.
Treatment Stage: Levelling and Aligning
Dana: This photo shows how much the teeth have unraveled by the 3rd month into the treatment.
Louis: Our patient is feeling very happy because the alignment is improving and friends and family are commenting on her smile. The brace feels light and cleaning is easy when using the right brushes. Dana routinely demonstrates the correct bushing technique at the fitting appointment and offers a complimentary oral hygiene pack containing everything you need to start your treatment. Seeing the hygienist every three months, for a professional clean, while in treatment with braces, is highly advisable. Dana will usually organise your hygienist appointments as part of your journey.
